Catholic Pastor and US Director of Chalice, a faith-based international mission
Chalice US is an international Catholic nonprofit serving families in need, currently supporting over 50,000 children and elderly at 56 sites in 15 countries. Chalice works closely with lay people, religious missionaries and local communities; we believe that those who live and experience the difficulties of poverty in developing countries are also those most knowledgeable and capable of responding to its effects. Every sponsor site we assist is under local direction helping to educate youth and empower their families and communities. No child is turned away based on gender, race or religion. Sponsored children and teens are given a quality education that prepares them for a bright future. Chalice US empowers families and communities of sponsored children by implementing Direct Family Funding (DFF). Within this model, parents or guardians are empowered to make positive changes for their children, themselves and their communities. Sponsorship funds go directly to child guardians (typically mothers or grandmothers).Funds are deposited into personal bank accounts. Guardians must belong to a Small Community Group (SCG) and be active participants. SCGs are supported on an ongoing basis by sponsor site staff. Within these SCGs families determine the needs of their own families (within the context of education, nutrition, health, clothing and/or family or community development) with the assistance of a Social/Field Worker. If a guardian or parent is not capable of managing sponsorship funds properly (e.g. addictions, mental health issues, etc.) other arrangements are made to ensure that the child receives their sponsorship benefits and that the family is supported. Families participating in DFF receive financial literacy training on subjects like managing household finances, budgets, loans, balancing expenses, micro-finance and others.Chalice also provides assistance through our Critical Needs fund, which allows sponsored youth and their families to receive healthcare for severe illness and disability. Chalice's Disaster Relief fund provides a lifeline to communities affected by natural disasters.Chalice US follows strict guidelines for financial integrity. We commit over 90% of funds directly to our programs.Fr. Pat Cosgrove is the founder and president of Chalice. Fr. Rich LoBianco is the National Director of Chalice US.
