Food Production - Moulis-en-Médoc, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Graduated with a diploma in forestry engineering and very enthusiastic about life in all its forms, Jean-Baptiste Cordonnier always showed a high interest in the terroir, convinced that agroecology is not only good for the environment but also for the quality of the wines, reflections of the soil. For the last 10 years, Château Anthonic has been committed to the preservation of natural flora (many species of orchids in the vineyard), biodiversity (including planting hedges within the vineyards, refuges for wildlife) and the limitation of vine treatments. In 2016, we started the conversion to organic farming for the entire vineyard, which is for the most part in a single piece around the winery. The 2019 vintage is certified organic.Since 2017 an agroforestry project aiming to introduce trees in the plots has been carried out alongside. This innovative action aims to liven up the soil while benefiting from tree/vine cooperation by way of mycorrhizae that improves disease prevention – and vine protection against climatic extremes. Château Anthonic is the first wine estate to integrate fully-scaled agroforestry and organic viticulture in the Médoc. In addition, Château Anthonic has a deep sense of social responsibility and has implemented in 2018 together with other wine estates a professional wine training program with an organic farming positioning for young people "off to a bad start". It is called "Les Vignerons du Vivant".Finally, the diversity of grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot) guarantees richness and complexity in our wines. Blended to enhance elegance and finesse, our wines have a lot of charm from the age of 3 or 4 years and can age a decade or more for great vintages. We are experimenting with new ways of maturation in amphorae that seems particularly suitable for organic wines in agroforestry.Since the end of 2019, Théophile Cordonnier works enthusiastically with his father.
