Inspired by the cancer diagnosis of his grandmother in 2011, Virginia Tech sophomore Patrick Acker is raising funds for cancer research and counseling by crossing the country on his bicycle.Joined by fellow VT students Morgan Bissell and Oliver Donkervoet, the trio will cycle from San Francisco, California to Virginia Beach, Virginia. The journey will take 40 days, cover 3,400 miles, climb 14,265 feet, and encounter 115 degree temperatures.Along the way the team, dubbed "Cycling4aCure," will be stopping at cancer hospitals across the United States to encourage those battling cancer. At each location, the team will also adopt a terminally ill child for the day, including having the child join the team in a towed bike carrier as they cycle across town. A bike will also be donated to this child.Cycling4aCure will post live video streams from the road on their blog and Facebook page along with video/photography for the duration of the trip. Their hope is to inspire those with cancer to continue their fight as these students ride for their cause, and to show supporters what they have helped the team accomplish.Funds they raise will be given to the American Cancer Society and the team's fiscal sponsor, Cindy's Hope Chest, a cancer support network based in Charlotte, NC. The team has a final goal of $20,000.Proceeds to the American Cancer Society go towards the following: Road to Recovery, American Cancer Society 24/7 365 hotline, and Clinical Prevention Studies.Proceeds to Cindy's Hope Chest help individuals with the emotional and financial aspects of battling cancer. As a cancer survivor, Cindy counsels individuals on the cancer and treatment process. Proceeds help buy wigs, mastectomy bras, compression sleeves, and other related items for those in need. Cindy also coordinates babysitters, house cleaning, meal deliveries, and many other services free of charge.
