Photography - London, England, United Kingdom
Dan Tobin Smith has over a decade of experience working as a photographer specialising in installation and still life photography. His work has been commissioned by clients across the fields of fashion, music, publishing and advertising — from Alexander McQueen, Wallpaper*, Acne and Numero; to Hermes, Nike, Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton. Known for his bold, architectural and innovative images, Tobin Smith works by designing and constructing sets, often in collaboration with a roster of acclaimed set designers. He continues to evolve a distinctive aesthetic that is based on pushing boundaries with materials, lighting and perspective. He has consistently led the field in contemporary still life photography, with influential shoots such as Jay-Z's album ‘The Blueprint 3' in 2009.Tobin Smith's shoots can be an event worth documenting in themselves, often with teams of people working with extraordinary materials over several days to painstakingly build the set for a single image. As well as commercial briefs, Tobin Smith has developed a significant portfolio of personal work and exhibitions, notably his ongoing ‘Alphabet' series (documented at alphabetical.org). In 2013 Tobin Smith and regular collaborator Rachel Thomas exhibited 'Imaginary View' at Somerset House, one of London's most prestigious museums. Prints from the ‘Imaginary View' series were produced using the rare photogravure technique, and exhibited at The Royal Academy in London by Paul Stolper Gallery in 2014. 2014 also saw the construction of ‘The First Law of Kipple' for London Design Festival - a 200-square-metre installation comprising thousands of colour-themed objects. Voted into the top five "Things to Do" this year by Time Out and celebrated as "One of the best shows of the year" by Its Nice That. ‘The First Law of Kipple' travelled to Redline Gallery in Denver in 2015 as part of the ‘Playgrounds' exhibition.
