The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, founded in 1959, is almost as old as IIT Madras itself. DoHSS has a vibrant multi-disciplinary research space facilitated by a team of diverse and experienced faculty. PhD admissions take place twice a year, in January and July. Moreover, from 2006, the department has launched a unique five-year Integrated Masters Programme in two major streams - Development Studies and English Studies. Forty-six students are accepted for this programme every year through a rigorous Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam (HSEE). The department stands out for its interdisciplinary nature that fosters a holistic learning environment. This allows students to develop an appreciation for a very diverse set of fields, including Development Studies, Economics, English Studies, Environmental Studies, History, International Relations, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology. The Department offers both Master's and Doctoral programmes, as well as electives for B.Tech and M.Tech students.Coupled with its multi-disciplinary background, the Department boasts of a highly diverse and experienced faculty.
