Nonprofit Organization Management - Des Moines, Iowa, United States
Our mission is to provide emergency food service to those who need in the cities of Des Moines, most of SeaTac, and the West Hill of Kent, Washington. No one is turned away. Founded in 1966 by twelve area churches, the Des Moines Area Food bank became and remains a separate non profit service organization and received 501(c)(3) status in 1982. We rent our service location space from the Des Moines United Methodist Church. We are also registered with the State of Washington to receive Charitable Donations. Every month the Des Moines Area Food Bank receives more than 1,000 visits and responds by handing out over 110,000 pounds of food. Families can visit once a month for as long as they need assistance, and they receive a mix of canned, fresh, and frozen food. Families typically receive enough food to last 10-12 days. The Des Moines Area Food Bank depends on the generosity of volunteers and donors to meet our mission. Our small staff is supported by more than 200 regular volunteers. Each week the food bank "rescues" thousands of pounds of produce, dairy, bread, and meat from local businesses and grocery stores. Food drives ,gardeners, and the purchasing power of monetary donations help feed hungry families. Our Food Bank is also strengthened through our partnerships with schools, churches, civic groups, United Way of King County, the cities of Des Moines and SeaTac, and individuals like you!Des Moines Area Food BankFounded: 1966Became Nonprofit: 1982Executive Director: Kris Van GaskenAssistant Director: Barbara Shimizu
