The ENIGMA Journal, which was founded in 2019 by the University of Exeter Creative Writing Society, provides a platform for poetry, fiction, nonfiction and script writing. We publish original writing online and produce an annual print journal, the first of which came out in August 2020. The name of the journal takes inspiration from the Exeter Book, which is the largest known collection of Old English literature still in existence. Many of the texts included in the collection are riddles, some were written in Old English but others are written in Latin. The form and genre of the riddle was called enigmata ('enigmas') in the Latin language. The name ENIGMA is a salute to a literary history central to Exeter, but the journal strives to create a collection of creative work that delivers a myriad of perspectives on the world we live in and the people we have become. The journal aims to curate an exciting and experimental terrain of new voices and narratives that can broadcast to audiences the creative output of the writing community here in Exeter.
