Education Management - Chicago, Illinois, United States
The EXCEL Mentoring program is a program dedicated to providing male primary school students with exposure activities that lead to developmentally appropriate outcomes. We work with students from underserved backgrounds who are best positioned to maximize the input provided them via interactions with engaged, informed, fatherly men within their community. The EXCEL Mentoring program was founded in 2013 and originally serviced students from 1st to 3rd grade in one school. The program now services students from Pre-K through 8th grade in multiple locations in Chicago, Illinois. That said, The EXCEL mentoring program consists of a once a week, 1 hour mentoring session which follows the following format:• Solidarity Chant ( 30 secs)• Check-In (10 mins) o Mentees and Mentors check-in about their week since the last session• Discussion (35 mins) o Weekly Topics stressing Accountability, Responsibility, and Brotherhood • Physical Activity o Yoga and Self Control Exercises (10 mins), • Solidarity Chant (30 secs)• Dismissal (4 mins). The program is designed to efficiently fit into any school daytime or after-school structure and the format is designed to easily incorporate male volunteers (Mentors) into the mentoring process. A particular quality control measure we utilize is that the head mentor in any school is a full time professional within said school.
