Civic & Social Organization - Lansdowne, Ontario, Canada
Your Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve Community The Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve extends roughly 2700km² and encompasses nine municipalities in the south eastern portion of Ontario. One of 15 Biosphere Reserves in Canada, and 550 biosphere reserves worldwide, we are a part of a network of globally significant landscapes and strive to protect this region and its biodiversity through support and education towards sustainable community development. We accomplish our work by networking natural and historic conservation organisations, economic and social development groups, as well as the educational and scientific communities located within the Frontenac Arch region. Locally, we are known as the Biosphere Network. Collectively, the Biosphere Network helps guide the community towards a more integrated and effective approach to living on earth. FAB was designated in 2002 by UNESCO because of the areas' globally significant ecosystems, landscapes and heritage. The Frontenac Arch is a granite ridge that links the Adirondack Mountains to the Canadian Shield and the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Coast. The area is part of a larger corridor for migration and settlement of wildlife and plants and is one of the most bio-diverse regions in Canada. Five forest regions merge in the FAB area and act as a refuge for numerous at-risk plants, fish, birds and animals. For more information on FABR or Biosphere Reserves, please refer to our web page www.fabr.ca. As a Biosphere, FABR's mandate is to protect biodiversity and provide education, logistics and support for sustainable community development. Its mission is to encourage people to work together towards a more sustainable way of life.
