LOCALLY INSPIRED, COMMUNITY DRIVENFounded in 2012 and based in Portland, Maine, Garbage to Garden is the beloved curbside compost service that offers urban dwellers, schools and commercial businesses a convenient way to recycle food scraps, including meat, dairy and bones, to be used to renew our local soil.Today, Garbage to Garden is the most successful market-based curbside composting company in the Northeast, servicing over 10,000 households, schools, restaurants, businesses and events throughout Maine and Massachusetts. The ethos of Garbage to Garden is rooted in the spirit of sustainability and supporting the local economy while making composting easy and accessible for all.HOW IT WORKS: Curbside composting is a way to recycle food scraps and compostable materials through a pickup service rather than at home. Instead of throwing food scraps (including dairy, bones and meats, seafood shells, paper products) and other compostable material into the trash, households use a Garbage to Garden bucket to collect these items. Each week, subscribers place their bucket curbside for Garbage to Garden to service. Garbage to Garden then brings the food scraps to local farms and facilities to be composted. Our finished compost is approved by MOFGA for organic gardening and crop production, and is available to participating households. WHY COMPOSTING IS IMPORTANT:Composting has numerous benefits for air quality, clean water, and soil. Food scraps have the correct ratio of nutrients that plants need to grow. By diverting your food scraps and compostable items from the waste stream, you are reducing what ends up in the landfill and "closing the loop" by returning those nutrients to the soil.
