The GLOBAL RECOVERY INITIATIVE (GRI) is an not-for-profit 501(c)3 social enterprise that seeks to help transform social attitudes and policy to remove barriers and create more opportunities for recovery from drug and alcohol problems for all who seek them.  Substance use problems are at the root of most of our nation's costly social problems.  While the active phase of addiction is well documented, the hope and possibilities of recovery often go unrealized.  By demonstrating the reality of recovery, providing the tools and advocating to eliminate barriers to recovery, GRI seeks to shift the paradigm from helplessness to empowerment.  Recovery goes far beyond not drinking or taking drugs.  Recovery is about living a healthy, productive, and expansive life.  That reality has been missing from the social conversation on addiction.  Without the promise of a better life, individuals and families affected by drug and alcohol problems remain trapped in the vicious cycle of active addiction, with innumerable costs to themselves, their communities and to the nation. GRI was founded and is lead by Christopher Kennedy Lawford. Mr. Lawford currently serves as the United Nations' first Goodwill Ambassador for Drug treatment and Care Issues; he is also working with the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), with Caron Treatment Centers, and with NGO's and advocacy groups around the world to spread the word that recovery is not only possible but is a reality for millions. In addition to his advocacy work, Mr. Lawford is a bestselling author (Symptoms of Withdrawal and Moments of Clarity) and has been in recovery for over 25 years. Mr. Lawford brings his unequaled expertise and visibility to GRI's work. GRI is also served by a Science and Policy Advisory Board that includes internationally recognized addiction and recovery experts, former high ranking federal officials and policy makers, media personalities and representatives of the recovery community.
