Hands of Mothers (Manos de Madres) is a Memphis-based 501C3 nonprofit organization that supports women globally through education and economic empowerment. Since our founding in 2007, Hands of Mothers has created sustainable business opportunities for over 600 women in Honduras, South Africa and Rwanda. These women have not only improved their own lives, but also those of more than 3,000 children and family members. In 2009, Hands of Mothers began collaboration with the Rwanda AIDS organization, Women's Equity in Access to Care and Treatment for HIV (WE-ACTx) to develop income generation opportunities for their beneficiaries. WE-ACTx was created in early 2004 in response to the need to provide access to antiretroviral therapy for the survivors of genocidal rape in Rwanda. WE-ACTx now offers highly integrated medical and psychosocial services, free of charge, for over 2,000 women and children living with HIV and AIDS from two locally-staffed clinical sites in Kigali. Our experience in Rwanda has shown that income generation is central to physical and psychological wellbeing. Hands of Mothers is committed to generating prosperity, promoting health and fostering peace in this fragile and extraordinary country.
