City Government/Municipal Government - Indianapolis, IN, US
Hoosier Farmers Market Association is a network of farmers, vendors, farmers market managers, value-added producers, artisans, businesses and government agencies working together to strengthen the local food system in Indiana through direct marketing channels. Our Mission is to strengthen the food system, increase local food access, foster economic development and encourage thriving, healthy communities by supporting direct marketing relationships. Strengthen the Food System As a farmers market association, we leverage resources, funding, marketing and promotions. We act as an intermediary providing education, tools and resources to farmers, vendors, market managers, consumers and the public. We're developing a comprehensive, updated listing of Indiana farmers markets. We support farmers market masters whose tenures tend to last between 6 months-4 years. Increase Local Food Access We decrease food transportation footprints. In the U.S., the average distance food travels from farm to table is 1,500 miles. We increase food security. Indiana is 90% food insecure relying on out-of-state and international imports for its regular food supply. We support SNAP at farmers markets. Indiana has the smallest number of SNAP markets in the Midwest with 42 authorized farmers markets yet 300% increase in SNAP usage at markets since 2010. Foster Economic Development In 2014, SNAP spending at farmers markets and direct farms funneled more than $78,000 into Indiana's economy directly benefiting Hoosier farmers. Purchasing local retains 67 cents of every dollar in Indiana. Encourage Thriving Communities Farmers markets enhance direct-to-consumer interactions between growers and consumers and increase access to affordable, nutrient dense locally grown and produced foods.SpecialtiesFarmers Markets, Public Education, Food Access, SNAP, Technical Assistance, Double Up Incentives, Marketing, Grant Writingwww.hoosierfarmersmarkets.org
