Civic & Social Organization - Los Angeles, California, United States
IBWEP is a multicultural organization that seeks to create an education system, freed from racism, to transform teaching through empowering educators and students to eradicate systems of oppression in and outside of the classroom. The Ida B. Wells Education Project was formed on June 8, 2020, in the midst of a worldwide uprising against racism. We are a collective of classroom educators who came together in that moment to ask: "How can we center Black history, Black struggle and Black life in our curriculum? How can we empower young people to lead in powerful movements for change?" Across the U.S., many K-12 classroom educators want to do anti-racist work - and many just don't know where to start. There are countless conferences, workshops and meetings to give orientation and support to teachers who are thinking about these issues. But we want to do more than that. We want to put tools in teachers hands. We are educators who are leaders in our schools, unions and communities and we have experience in a wide-range of campaigns for justice and equality. We have spent years crafting and teaching rigorous anti-racist, student-centered lessons that create powerful learning experiences for diverse student groups. We know that teachers can be leaders in transforming our schools into liberated spaces. We want to connect and build with educators who are engaging in this vital work in their classrooms across the country. We seek to build a movement. With this project we aim to expand our work and help educators across the nation bring anti-racist education to their classrooms and schools.
