Nonprofit Organization Management - Swindon, England, United Kingdom
InSwindon is a BID company paid for by businesses to promote and maintain the town centre. So what does BID mean? Well, BID stands for Business Improvement District, first established in Canada in the 60s. BIDs are now used all over the world, with over 200 in the UK. The first BID in England started in January 2005 and the main goal is to support businesses by increasing visitors, footfall and, ultimately, spending. Swindon's businesses voted in 2007 to establish a BID, since then InSwindon has been working hard to make the town centre a vibrant place where people want to visit. The BID covers a larger area than most people realise, between Princes Street, Commercial Road and Faringdon Road, covering 371 businesses in total. We have a board of governors, which comprise of business owners, who have strategic control over the BID. Every five years the businesses vote as to whether they wish to continue with the BID. Like most BIDs, our Street Team is in place to ensure that visiting the area is a safe and pleasurable experience for all. The team spend their days assisting shoppers, dealing with graffiti, litter and fly postings and work with the police and Swindon Borough Council to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the area. If a child is lost, it is often the street team that will get them reunited with their parents. We want to help build Swindon's economic prosperity for the future by creating the right environment for all Swindon town centre's businesses to perform better.
