Jim Ales is a Bay Area based Creative Strategist and Brand Builder. Jim Ales / Studio 280 is drawn to companies, organizations and individuals who thoughtfully challenge themselves and their audiences - those who seek positive experiences, who find great purpose in their work, who champion ideas for the greater good.Prior to founding Studio 280, Jim Ales led the brand/communications team for the non-profit Monterey Bay Aquarium. Jim's responsibilities included establishing the overall vision, strategy and management of the institution's visual voice and brand, engaging in Aquarium-wide strategic programs, positioning and initiatives. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is consistently ranked the top Aquarium experience in the United States, and is recognized as a worldwide leader in ocean conservation.Jim is widely known as a creative strategist, thought leader and advocate for his profession. Jim was elected to the AIGA National Board of Directors (AIGA, the professional association for design). His work appears in Graphis Publications, AIGA, Communication Arts and American Association of Museums publications, among others. His commentaries on brand strategy and design are featured in Allworth Press, Rockport Press and AIGA publications. In addition, Jim is a frequent lecturer at design conferences, seminars and universities. In 2011, Jim was awarded the degree of Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments and influence in the Arts. Jim was elected an AIGA Fellow in 2015.
