The University of Hawaii at Manoa Katipunan Club is comprised of all students currently enrolled in the Filipino Language & Philippine Literature Program courses offered at the University of Hawaii.The Katipunan Club and the Filipino Language & Philippine Literature Program, under the University of Hawaii's Department of Hawaiian and Indo-Pacific Languages and Literature, was organized in the Fall of 1992 by Dr. Teresita Ramos and Dr. Ruth Elynia Mabanglo. With original goals of jumpstarting interest within younger Filipino generations, the program now serves as the premiere collegiate-based resource center for the creation, preservation, and promotion of Filipino language, literature, and culture here in Hawaii.The club name is inspired from the Philippine revolutionary society KKK, Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangan, Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (Highest and Most Venerated Association of the Sons and Daughters of the land) It was founded by Andres Bonifacio in Tondo, Manila and anti-Spanish colonialism Filipinos in 1982, whose main goal was to gain independence from Spain.
