The Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF) is a Kenyan public foundation that supports community driven development initiatives. We were founded to promote the sustainable development of communities through social investment, resource mobilization, endowment building and grant making. Community development activities have a legacy in the colonial period where these initiatives where used to occupy the people and thus control anti-colonialist activities. In the reality of post independent Kenya, who's development is hampered by increasing public debt and fiercely competitive international markets, it has emerged as empowering community development initiatives is the ‘felt needs' approach (that is the nature of community development initiatives) required to engender local involvement in our development issues. We envision a society in which Kenyans work together to alleviate poverty. In the Kenyan community spirit of ‘Harambee' we believe that rapid and enduring positive change is possible when communities are able to contribute to and initiate solutions to their development challenges. KCDF's main focus is to build on communities' energies; on their development priorities and collective initiatives through grant making. Through helping communities build their own endowment funds for common development objectives, we continue to help them invest in their future. Our future activities are focused on introducing the economic enterprise element to improve the sustainability of our community driven development initiatives. In this way, KCDF is making a social economic investment in Kenya's communities.
