Lions Camp Tatiyee is a summer camp with the express mission of enriching the lives of individuals with special needs by providing a life-improving experience promoting their emotional health, independence, self- esteem and confidence, all free-of-charge.Since 1958, Lions Camp Tatiyee has faithfully carried out this mission, providing services to over 450 children and adults with special needs each season. To date, we have been and still are the only free summer camp for the Arizona special needs community. We represent a critical service for low-income families beset with the burdensome medical costs associated with caring for a child with special needs. Indeed, nearly 75% of parents stated they would be unable to, or would face immense financial difficulty if they had to pay for our services. To deliver on our mission, Lions Camp Tatiyee conducts 8-9 one week sessions each summer according to the ages and disabilities of the communities we serve. Each session lasts 6 days and 5 nights, providing our special needs communities with the chance to participate in a truly normal summer camp experience, allowing them to partake in activities commonly afforded only to their mainstream peers. Lions Camp Tatiyee leads our field in programmatic innovation, adapting activities such as rock climbing, archery, go-kart racing, robotics, arts and crafts, baseball, and more.We are the only free summer camp for special needs individuals in the state of Arizona and we are the only summer camp to focus on encouraging emotional health in the special needs community, especially important due to the extreme social isolation and higher rates of depression this community suffers. Lions Camp Tatiyee truly offers the special needs community an environment of complete accessibility and emotional support, allowing campers to challenge their perceived limitations to become more independent, confident, and happy.
