Local Story Details

Better storytelling leads to better work. It helps us learn what's really happening in a community; it allows stakeholders to express themselves in an uncensored manner that can be powerful and therapeutic; and it gives a voice to the marginalized, allowing them to really be advocates for change directly to audiences. Let's move success stories over to the PR department where they belong, and focus on real storytelling, stories that are complex and expansive, that take place over longer periods of time, and that are unabashedly honest. We started Local Story three years ago with two core beliefs: social enterprises need great authentic stories if they really want to resonate with audiences in this era of social media; and that anyone can become a great storyteller with enthusiasm, training, and follow-up mentoring. Since then we've had the privilege of working with great partners, from small, nimble NGOs, to the largest donor organization in the world. Each partner also helps us put into action those core beliefs, and in so doing helps us re-examine and elucidate its mechanics. What do "great stories" actually look like? And what is their impact? How can we put into place a training path for organizational staff that isn't too burdensome, for people who are already working overtime because of the passion they bring to their work. The biggest insight we've had since beginning Local Story is that storytelling can be used for far more than simply expanding an audience and raising awareness. In Miami, Local Story is using storytelling as a way for young adults in the foster care system to process their childhoods, putting difficult stories behind them and moving forward. In Haiti, we're using storytelling for advocacy, allowing small communities to build tapestries of stories that are interconnected and that allow marginalized communities to have a voice to the outside world.
