M-DO takes its name from the Tibetan word 'hmdo' meaning junction or meeting point. The name drives the organization's programming with its commitment to world dance and music through classes, workshops and performances. M-DO/Kathak Toronto has been in existence as a charitable organization since December 1988. Artistic Director, Joanna de Souza's return to Canada in 1987, was fuelled by the intent to establish Kathak in Toronto, from her unique perspective as an informed, contemporary, non-South Asian classical dancer.Since 1991, Artistic Director of the Toronto Tabla Ensemble, Ritesh Das, and Joanna de Souza, have been promoting north Indian classical music and dance locally, nationally and internationally. With roots deeply connected to traditional study and performance, through their master teachers, they also have the keen sense of translating these age-old art forms in an open-minded, fresh Canadian context. Their inspired work continues to create new generations of Canadians who can see themselves in these arts, as practitioners and enthusiasts.
