Architecture & Planning - Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
Our practice has a unique philosophical approach to each design. We are committed to create buildings with urban manners that are contextually appropriate in scale. Rural interventions focus on the making of meaningful place that is informed by the landscape and genius loci. The studio departs from the theoretical premise that the house is a micro-city and the city a macro-house. Furthermore, there is a relationship of reciprocity between the house as a micro-cosmos of the city and the idea of the city made to resemble all aspects of dwelling. The city is regarded as a collection of buildings that create public space. The urban wall in all its complexity and variations represents our perceived world. The city is furthermore seen as a compact and integrated entity with the focus on the public realm and communities. In the architecture of this studio, the primary role of the building is the making of urban space: the street, the square, the place; urbanity to respond to.Buildings and settlements that contribute positively to the environment, to the saving of CO2 emissions and the use of passive energy are central to the studio's philosophy and applied to all projects.
