Material Performance Assessments, LLC is a limited liability corporation formed on July 7, 2014 in the State of Alabama for the purpose of evaluation of physico-chemical properties of biomaterials in the form of ophthalmic products such as contact lenses, intraocular lenses, spectacle lenses, stromal implants, conjunctival inserts, and in situ polymerizing hydrogels. The corporation became operational on October 1, 2014. Its headquarters are at 937 Tulip Poplar Lane, Hoover, Alabama and its President is Dr. William J. Benjamin. The specialty of Material Performance Assessments, LLC is the determination of oxygen permeability of materials in products of small dimensions such as used in or around the eye, and the oxygen transmissibility of those products. Dr. Benjamin's laboratory follows standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 18369-4) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z80.20) for equipment and test methods regarding the determination of oxygen permeability of contact lens materials and oxygen transmissibility of contact lenses, and other ophthalmic products. Other characteristics of ophthalmic products and their materials may also be assessed, including clinical and clinically relevant performance of biomaterials and ophthalmic products. Over the years, Dr. Benjamin has determined the oxygen permeability of over 200 ophthalmic materials and performed clinical evaluations of more than 25 different devices, having received sponsorship from companies and associations in 13 different countries and 15 different states in the USA.
