The mission of the Midwest Regional Education, Awareness & Cancer Helps Project (R.E.A.C.H.) is to provide an integrated network of organizations and individuals in regional leadership to develop a coordinated, comprehensive initiative to decrease the cancer burden on the Midwestern states of Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Missouri. The purpose of the Midwest R.E.A.C.H. project is to reduce cancer incidence and mortality in the target states by reaching those populations most in need of resources and education in prevention, early detection, treatment, rehabilitation and palliation.Through the continuum of action, a comprehensive approach will be made to broaden the scope of current cancer initiatives in the Midwest. To help reduce the future burden through prevention, detect cancer at it's earliest stages, and encourage survivorship as a unifying theme of treatment, research will be done to isolate people groups most in need of intentional, targeted, interpersonal and societal education in cancer information. The Midwest R.E.A.C.H. project recognizes the tremendous burden of cancer on the Midwest, the United States and the world as a whole. The disease cuts across social and economic borders as the second leading cause of death worldwide. The amount of those diagnosed with cancer in certain age and ethnic groups is projected to steadily increase to double its' current rates in the next ten years. Cancer is expensive to treat and as it becomes a survivable disease, the financial effects will have increasing drain our world economy.Cancer has a tight grasp on our society and the Midwest is no exception. Although great progress has been made in the fight against cancer, much remains to be done. The Midwest R.E.A.C.H. Project, in keeping with the Global Cancer Initiative of 2020 put in place by the World Health Organization, will adhere to a plan for diminishing the impact cancer has on our global society.
