Why Moth? Moths are attracted to light because of something called transverse orientation, which means they use distant light sources like the moon as a reference point for their navigation. Around man-made lights like electric lanterns and streetlights, they become confused, and disorientated, and instead fly straight toward the light source... which ends up killing them. I see this as a metaphor for myself and for most people I know. We are distracted by the artificial brightnesses of the world, of the urgencies in our lives, of heavy-handed religion, and we have a sense of disorientation regarding our identities, relationships, and spiritualties. It's hard to have a sense of where we are and where we should be going. It's hard to have a sense of who we are! The practice of Spiritual Direction is a practice of re-orienting ourselves to a central light, of taking time to become still and to lift our minds and hearts to the heavens, and of engaging with the God of the universe in order to better find our self, place, meaning and way forward.
