My Neighbor Magnets is a community advocacy business and product. The primary product is a simple, visually pleasing magnet to help share and collect neighbors' contact information. The goal of this business is to help neighborhoods become "communities" again. We should be able to rely on our neighbors when we are in need. We should always have an open line of communication with our neighbors to increase the safety and well-being of where we live.The idea for My Neighbor Magnets came to me when I realized that I've lived in my house for a year and I still couldn't remember my neighbors' names. We'd exchanged pleasantries a few times. Shoot, I helped them shovel snow, but since it had been so long since that first introduction, we rarely shared more than an awkward hello. If there was an emergency, I wouldn't have known who to call for, much less known how to get a hold of them. I just didn't feel like that was right, so this was my idea to change that, but that personal need didn't justify mass production of My Neighbor Magnets.The story that pushed me into action was from a young family at church. A single mom with kids ranging from toddler to elementary-school age was taking care of a violently ill baby, but the school-aged children still needed to get to school. They were close enough to walk, but not on their own. Other families in the neighborhood attended the same school but because she didn't have a way to contact those neighbors, she kept her children home from school.If My Neighbor Magnets can help one child get to school, help one neighbor's mail get collected while they are on vacation, or help get that one cup of sugar needed for that batch of cookies for the bake sale tomorrow, it will be a success.
