Natural Recovery is a community group that aims to use nature as a way of aiding in the recovery of people with mental health conditions. We work at Syrian House, a care home for adults with enduring mental health problems located in Sale, Greater Manchester.In September 2010 we were awarded a grant from Ecominds, a £7.5million funding scheme run by Mind on behalf of the BIG Lottery Fund, to transform a lawned area into an artistically enhanced and organic sensory garden. The garden design includes an organic vegetable plot, colourful and edible flowers, soft plants, aromatic herbs and eco-friendly pieces of art created during regular art workshops. We offer two types of activities: gardening sessions and art workshops. In both cases, we aim to bring together residents and volunteers from the local community in an attempt to reduce social exclusion and combat any stigma relating to mental health.
