Arts and Crafts - New York, NY, US
New York Classical Theatre's mission is to reinvigorate and create audiences for the theater by presenting all-FREE productions of popular classics and forgotten masterpieces in non-traditional public spaces throughout the five boroughs.New York Classical's hallmark is accessibility and our signature Panoramic Theatre productions, which transform vast public spaces into dynamic theatrical settings. We use multiple locales within each venue to stage specific scenes. Our production of "The Seagull" in Central Park incorporated fishing in a 3-acre lake, on the shoreline in Lower Manhattan, with the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop, we staged "As You Like It." During the 3 weeks of our groundbreaking production of "Henry V," Statue Cruises boats transported 500 people nightly from Battery Park across New York Harbor to Governors Island, where we staged epic battles on the grounds of Fort Jay. Audiences physically enter the world of the play, becoming active participants in the drama, resulting in a highly immersive theatrical experience. In 2000, we began presenting our free Panoramic Theatre productions across a 12-acre area of Central Park. Since then, we have expanded our programming with productions throughout The Battery (Battery Park, 25 acres), 150,000 square feet of Brookfield Place, Governors Island (30 acres) as well as Carl Schurz Park, One Liberty Plaza, Prospect Park, One New York Plaze and Brooklyn Bridge Park. Over the past 18 years, we have staged 39 Panoramic productions; playing to nearly a quarter million people. We take great pride in our artistic merit, critical acclaim and the tremendous response from our diverse audience, spanning all ages, ethnicities, education and income levels. Our most recent survey demonstrates that 79% are under the age of 60; nearly 30% live at or below the NYC poverty line; and 20% self-identify as non-Caucasian.
