Newborns Vietnam is a UK registered charity dedicated to reducing neonatal mortality in South East Asia, with a specific focus on Vietnam.Further reductions in child mortality depend on substantial improvements in neonatal survival rates, typically newborn care is the branch of medicine with the least investment given the high number of deaths. Worldwide the under-five mortality rate has been decreasing but neonatal deaths represent an increasing proportion of the global under-five deaths. Our experience in Vietnam supports this. Since 1990 Vietnam has made a significant reduction in child mortality but neonatal mortality accounts for close to 60% of all deaths in children under 1 year old.Our primary focus is on the lack of progress in reducing early neonatal deaths (the first week of life), specifically the lack of advanced newborn care at referral hospitals and the large regional variation in skills and experience in more specialist newborn care.We address the full spectrum of challenges facing developing and emerging countries looking to provide the best care they can as they seek to raise the standards of newborn care, step by step. We do this through establishing long-term direct partnerships and specifically investment in neonatal nurse training.
