Political Organization - Oxford, England, United Kingdom
The Oxford University Liberal Democrats is, when its direct predecessor is taken into account, one of the longest surviving university political societies in the country. Formed in 1987 by a merger of the Oxford University Liberal Club and the Oxford University Social Democrats, a year before the national parties did so themselves, it is the recognised successor to both. The OU Liberal Club itself was a successor to two organisations founded in the late 19th century, the Russell Club and the Palmerston Club.OULD is one of the most active student branches of the Liberal Democrats, helping out during elections by leafletting and doorknocking, and has even stood students as candidates in student wards for the City Council elections.Past Presidents and Co-Chairs have included Jeremy Thorpe, Michael Foot, and more recently, Evan Harris and Martin Horwood.
