In the early 1990s the Episcopal Church started Happy Camp, a summer camp for at-risk children in the diocese of Northwest Texas. Promise Camp was added in 2005 and focused specifically on children of the incarcerated, of whom there are over 15,000 in the diocese. In 2011 the organization incorporated as Panhandle Promise Project so as to be able to expand services and reach beyond the Episcopal church for funding became. In 2012 the project was awarded the status of 501c3 organization and separated from the Episcopal Church. Mentoring and other services were implemented in 2013 in order to further impact the lives of the children.
