Arts & Crafts - Bishop Auckland, England, United Kingdom
Artwork by the community, for the community. Founded in June 2017, Pineapple Castle is a nonprofit organisation which taps into the creative talents of the local community and showcases the varying abilities and styles in singular pieces. From our base in Bishop Auckland, we encourage local schools, businesses and social groups to become involved in our community artwork. We are assisted by local independent business owner and artist, Gillian Arnold, who runs specialist workshops throughout our projects. Our name originates from nearby Auckland Castle, which was the first place in the UK to successfully grow pineapples and we wanted to share this little known local fact. Additionally, we wanted to provide a safe and secure location for budding artists to grow, and what is more secure than a castle? Our first project was "On the Map", which features shops & points of interest in Bishop Auckland drawn by over 70 individuals including schoolchildren & business owners, all collated onto a singular map. The purpose was to prove Bishop Auckland is not a dying, boring town, but a thriving market town with a surprising amount of history. Did you know that Stan Laurel (of Laurel & Hardy fame) was educated here, and even has his own statue? We're always working on our next big project, so why not stay connected to learn what we're up to? If you want to be involved in a project, why not contact us directly? We're always delighted to welcome more community driven people to our network.
