The Pioneer Valley Renewables (PVR) hydrokinetic turbine creates electricity in tides, rivers, or miniature water flows. Our turbine generates much more electricity per blade diameter, and at lower water speeds, effectively creating new source opportunities, and expanding customer markets for renewable energy generation.TECHNOLOGY: It is based on fluid dynamics and patents granted and pending. We use (1) unique shroud shapes that are better at concentrating flow into the plane of the blades, (2) a unique blade design that takes advantage of this distribution of flow, and (3) correct placement and synergy of the two innovations. A secondary benefit of the shroud use is that it can anchor a mesh that protects fish. Our small shroud shapes around 10 meter diameter blades increase the velocity in the plane of the blades from 1 m/s in the stream to 1.3 in the plane of the blades. The power increase is related to the velocity cubed. This results in a 50% increase in power by increasing the diameter by 10%.This is a major conceptual advance over the current idea of increasing energy flow by funneling, a process which provides a mild increase in flow speed in the center of the funnel, where the hub is located and energy enhancement is almost useless. Our increased energy flow occurs at the tips.VALIDATION; In November 2014, we performed a live test versus control in the Connecticut River canal system in Massachusetts under the supervision of Holyoke Gas and Electric. The data showed improvement of over 100% over control. In addition, the technology was validated by simulations at Tel Aviv University and at the US Navy's Surface Warfare Center.MARKET SEGMENTS: Major and minor rivers and tides all over the world. The fact that our turbines start to produce electricity at lower speeds is also a game changer. These can also be miniaturized to provide small amounts of electricity for water system sensors, a market in the hundreds of millions of units.
