Pēpi Penapena is an organisation that wants every Moari child to be happy, loved and strong. Our movement is Ngakau Aroha Parenting, a movement to remember the gentle and respectful parenting ways of tūpuna (ancestral) Māori from pre-colonial times. We know that our tūpuna believed pepi were born tapu (sacred) so were protected from harm, and were born with mana so were respected from birth. Our evidence is based on oral histories, waiata oriori, pūrākau, exporer's accounts and artworks from the period. We want parents and whānau to learn and understand that kaupapa and apply it to their everyday life, building strong relationships between whanaunga (relatives) and the tamariki under their care. We have an in-depth course to share these messages, a thriving Facebook community and an informative website about tūpuna parenting ways. Come on this journey with us. We once were warriors, but we were gentle , respectful and loving parents and whanau too. This is what we remember.
