Creating readers for life - It's fun, it's simple and it works.Schools running sponsored Readathon's to raise money to help children in hospital.We take books and storytellers to seriously ill children in hospitals across the UK. We send 120 books every half term which have to be brand new due to high infection controls; these are suitable for children from 0 - 18 years old. We also provide a professional storytelling day every half term. We are entirely funded by donations including money raised by children doing sponsored Readathon's in their schools.One of the reasons kids don't read is lack of motivation. One of the things that motivates kids is helping other kids.Readathon's simple (but brilliant) idea is to link the two.And it works...» Some 3,000 schools are involved every year» Encouraging around 750,000 pupils to love reading» 30 major hospitals across the UK receive regular deliveries of brand new books from Readathon, reaching 100,000 hospitalised children each year» Thousands of seriously ill children have benefited through our partner charitiesOUR STORYBrough Girling, an English teacher and children's author, imagined this in 1984 when he established the first sponsored read. He called it a Readathon and asked his friend, Roald Dahl to become the Chairman. Both were passionate about encouraging children to read whatever they want for fun. Back then, this was a radical idea.As Brough says, "Reading for children is more powerful than for adults because children have bigger imaginations. They don't see reading as ' worthy', as we do; for them a book is a toy, and reading gives them a feeling of being on holiday."Children love Readathon, and parents and teachers love the fact that they see their children reading. Since Brough had his great idea, millions of children have taken part, raising more than £25 million to help seriously ill children.Let's keep going and raise even more!
