Born in San Jose, California in 1940, Richard Bostrom has always had a passion for art. His interest in art was first inspired by high school field trips to the museum at San Jose State University. As a young man he soon realized that he was gifted at creating original drawings, paintings, and sculptures. He soon appreciated that to pursue his dreams of becoming an artist he needed to formalize his education surrounding art and the associated mediums. In 1971, he received a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art from the College of Notre Dame. After years of pursuing his art work as a hobby, Richard decided to leave the industrial environment in 1998 to focus his passion full time in a studio in Sunnyvale, California. Richard has exhibited his work in over 19 shows in the bay area and current has work be shown at Gallery 9 in Los Altos, California. Richards's current sculptures are carved directly and can be viewed from many points of view. Some are whimsical, some are serious, and some are experimental, exploring form, shadow, light and space relationships. In this latest work he stresses the natural color of the material finishing it with several coats of Tung oil and wax. Light and dark areas are important aspects of the design as the light strikes the pieces, the perspective can change giving different appearance to the pieces. Richard's new paintings are energy filled abstracts, painted on cradled panels or canvas using acrylics. The paintings are bright and fun. He enjoys the spontaneity of working directly on the canvas and the vibrancy of the colors. The paintings are available with floating, conventional frames or gallery wrap.
