Sankofa Initiative for Culture and Development is a non-governmental organisation registered in Nigeria. The initiative is funded by grants, acts of charity and freewill donations of individuals and philanthropic organisations. It focuses on strengthening the relation between culture and sustainable development through the expansion of Africa's cultural and creative sector. It embraces tradition, celebrates creativity and advocates for the inclusion of culture in policies related to education, the economy, environment, technology, social cohesion and international cooperation based on the conviction that culture ultimately shapes development and human relations. Our name, Sankofa is derived from an Akan concept that admonishes us to reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward. This aptly captures our mission to strengthen the relation between culture and sustainable development through exploratory and participatory expansion programmes that positively impact Africa's cultural and creative sector. VISION To raise a new generation of cultural practitioners and creative professionals that will harness Africa's vast cultural resources to meet the challenges of sustainable development and social cohesion. MISSION To strengthen the relation between culture and sustainable development through the expansion of Africa's cultural and creative sector in collaboration with emerging cultural practitioners as well as educational, cultural and development organisations around the world.
