Save the Cape, Inc., Is a North Carolina nonprofit corporation was established in 2010 to tackle the imminent threat to the human and natural environment of a very special place, the lower Cape Fear region. The region, long protected by neglect, has become the focus of commercial and heavy industrial projects drawn to the area simply by its availability. To stop this march of heavy industry, organized, effective opposition is needed. Save the Cape is the engine of opposition. Our mission is three fold: Watchdogs: We analyze the studies of Federal, State and private agencies to make sure they're telling you and our elected officials the truth. Advocates: First, we must stop the North Carolina International Terminal from ever seeing the light of day. This $4.4 billion project is an abuse of taxpayer dollars and will have an irrevocable, catastrophic impact on the delicate ecological balance of this region. The ability to fund this project rests with the NC General Assembly and our legislators in Washington DC, since both State and Federal money is required to move forward. We will launch a frontal assault on the viability of this project through legislative lobbying, newsletters, and community outreach.Educators: The Cape Fear region is home to families, retirees and working people. We envision positive outreach to all within the community educating and involving them with the unique characteristics of the Cape Fear region.
