SPRA was created on May 29 2012 as a community response to a threat of launching an aerobic bioreactor experiment in the German Mills Settlers Park. Within a month, SPRA mobilized hundreds of people in the community and around to oppose this project, collected over 600 signatures in the petition to stop the bioreactor proposal and gained overwhelming support of the Markham Council in the voting to stop bioreactor initiative once and forever – all 12 Councillors supported the community residents and said "No" to the bioreactor plans.Since this time, SPRA has organized a number of community events and initiatives, including Park clean-ups, Thanksgiving Park walks, Community picnics, residents' polls, supported Markham-wide Stormwater Flood Remediation initiative and Thornlea Revitalization plans, etc.SPRA mission is to make this community safer, cleaner, happier and more comfortable place to live.SPRA Goals:SPRA is created to protect rights and support interest of ratepayers and residents of community surrounding German Mills Settles Park;To encourage communication, cooperation and mutual support among ratepayers and residents, City authorities and other community groups, disseminate information on issues concerning community life;To promote accountability in the administrative process of government and other organizations, foster democratic process and public participation in local government.
