Leisure/Hospitality - Truth or Consequences, NM, US
Located midway between El Paso Texas and Albuquerque, Sierra County New Mexico is a diverse and inspiring environment with 4,236 square miles-worth of opportunities for exploration. Elephant Butte Lake, the largest body of water in the state is here, as well as picturesque Caballo Lake, the Rio Grande, and the famous hot springs of Truth or Consequences (formerly named Hot Springs - now named after a game show!) We are home to 3 state parks (Percha, Caballo and Elephant Butte), several old mining towns (Chloride, Hillsboro, and Kingston), and an amazing array of possibilities for outdoor recreationists - fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, birding, tubing, and road tripping (the Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway is here!). If you like rodeos and roping, look no further. Snowbirds love us for our temperate desert climate, but those who prefer mountainous climes will not be disappointed either - eastern Sierra County contains portions of both the Gila Wilderness and Aldo Leopold Wilderness. Local museums include the Veterans Memorial Museum and Geronimo Springs Museum in T or C, the Pioneer Store Museum in Chloride, Percha Bank in Kingston, and the Black Range Museum in Hillsboro. Art galleries and shops can be found throughout the county, and the quirky downtown Truth or Consequences Commercial/Hot Springs District received Historic classification in 2007. We are also proud to be the future home of Spaceport America - groundbreaking occurred on 6.19.09, and construction is expected to take 2 years. Ted Turner's vast Armendaris Ranch is located in Sierra County; the Geronimo Springs Museum hosts visits to the ranch each year. Armendaris trips include the popular Bat Cave Tour, the Fra Cristobal Mountains Tour, and more. Visitors to Sierra County discover a friendly community and numerous opportunities to play and relax.
