The silent revolution of communal architecture.Driving force in modern civilisation has been individual material gain, which is accepted as legitimate, even admirable, on the grounds that personal greed ultimately yields public benefits. Our modern civilisation has developed within the architecture of this convenient belief. So far it persisted with whatever injustice and suffering it implies as long as it was possible to pretend that the world is an infinite resource and that the destructive forces that humans create are insignificant. In view of striking social inequality and globale environmental degradation we begin to see that a society that is based on this principle will destroy itself in time. The conditions of survival, let alone justice, require empathetic planning in the interests of the global community as a whole. But as long as some specialised class, including the class of architects, is in a position of authority, it will continue to set policy in the special interests that it serves. The ultimate question is whether democracy and freedom are values to be preserved or nuisances to be avoided. In this possibly terminal phase of human existence, participation, democracy and freedom are more than values to be treasured, they may well be essential to survival. As a collective we are dedicated to the support and the architecture of a society which takes control of its own destiny and which concerns itself with community interest, guided by values of solidarity, sympathy and concern for others. The difference between noise and music is the difference between domination and balance. Silentmusic is defined as inaudible vibrations combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. This is true for the empathy between human beings as well as for stones in a cathedral. Our books and our buildings are just instruments to echo and amplify the silent beauty of the one of two future possibilities.
