Over 40 years ago, in 1971, a few dozen people organized and congregated for the first Gay Rights rally in San Jose. The following year, the first gay newspaper, Lambda News, began to promote the event. In 1976, hundreds would gather for the first official Gay Pride Festival, held at St. James Park in downtown San Jose, featuring political speakers, community booths, and local entertainment. In 1977, the first Gay Pride Parade kicked off what had become the yearly San Jose Gay Pride Festival. In 2013, we celebrated the 38th Annual San Jose PRIDE Festival in spirit of "Strength and Diversity" during the third weekend in August, in Discovery Meadow Park, in Downtown San Jose. Today, same-sex marriages are legal in California. The LGBT community continues its move forward. So, does this organization. Effective 2014, The Gay Pride Celebration Committee of San Jose, is now Silicon Valley Pride. As we branch out to serve the needs of Mountain View, Santa Clara, Palo Alto, Campbell, Sunnyvale, and other surrounding areas, we are excited about the new opportunities and directions. Silicon Valley Pride is a non-profit organization.
