SOS Great Lakes is a grassroots organization of Great Lakes region residents fighting Ontario Power Generation's plan to bury nuclear waste in Kincardine, ON, on the shores of Lake Huron and in the Great Lakes Basin. Our Mission:To provide public education and raise awareness about the risks of radioactive waste and prevent its deep burial in Saugeen Shores, its neighbouring regions, and the Great Lakes Basin. Our Vision:The town of Saugeen Shores, its neighbouring regions, and the Great Lakes Basin free from the risk of contamination resulting from the deep burial of nuclear waste.More about SOS Great Lakes:SOS Great Lakes is a grass roots organization, originally established as Save Our Saugeen Shores, Inc, in February of 2012. We organized as we learned of Saugeen Shores plan to enter into the Nuclear Waste Management Organization's (NWMO) site selection process to find a host community for all of Canada's current and future highly radioactive used nuclear fuel. Separately, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has been planning to build a deep geologic repository (DGR) for low and intermediate level nuclear waste next to the Bruce Power Plant in Kincardine, Ontario, close to the shores of Lake Huron, in the Great Lakes Basin. Some intermediate level nuclear waste may be as highly radioactive as irradiated nuclear fuel.We believe that there should not be a deep geological repository (DGR) for any nuclear waste anywhere in the Great Lakes Basin, due to the potential for radioactive contamination of the Great Lakes, the worlds largest source of fresh water, and drinking water for 40 million people. Most international experts agree that radioactive waste is best stored far from people, animals and water sources. We are registered as a non- profit corporation in Ontario. We welcome new members and volunteers.
