Nonprofit Organization Management - Aventura, Florida, United States
The South Florida Cancer Association ("SFLCA"), provides cancer-related information, assistance, and support to the under-served communities of South Florida. We never turn a patient away, and there is never a charge for our services. Each one of our staff has had their lives touched by cancer. We understand what patients and their families are going through. We shoulder as much of the patient's burden as we are able because we've been there. In over 12 years of operation, the SFLCA has supported cancer patients across the State of Florida, around the U.S., and from other countries. The SFLCA provides over $1,000,000 annually in services to patients and their loved ones all without a single bill or charge from us.Our primary focus is on patient navigation. When the SFLCA is contacted for assistance, we find resources to provide the patient with the support they need. When these resources are unavailable, the SFLCA bears the costs. Our services provide assistance with cancer screenings, treatment, transportation to and from treatment, aftercare, and financial assistance necessary to maintain the patient and their family's quality of life. The SFLCA advocates when legislative matters infringe on the lives of our patients. The SFLCA advocated for the control and prohibition of cancer-causing materials used by manufacturers in household products and children's toys. Legislation in the 70's banned the use of these cancer-causing agents but when this legislation recently lapsed, lobbyist working on the behalf of these manufacturers attempted to block any consideration by Congress to renew these bans. The SFLCA and other organizations attended hearings and meetings with legislators resulting in the bans being renewed and manufacturers barred from introducing these cancer-causing products into unsuspecting consumers home. If it has an affect on public health, the SFLCA is in the forefront of advocacy. We are wholly funded by public donations.
