Imagine your perfectly healthy, vibrant and intelligent child suddenly dying within 24 hours of first developing flu-like symptoms, despite receiving medical attention from three professionals. You soon find out your child did not die from the flu, but rather from a rare, previously undiagnosed birth defect called Isolated Congenital Asplenia (ICA). Your child was born without a spleen. That is what happened to four-year old Travis Joseph Bones. Without his spleen, Travis' immune system was unable to fight the bacterial infection invading his body. He was dead less than 20 hours after first contracting a fever.T.E.A.M. 4 Travis (Together Ending Asplenia Mortality) was born after his mother, Allison realized that something must be done to prevent other parents from experiencing the devastating traumatic grief of losing their child to an unknown and under-diagnosed killer. T.E.A.M. 4 Travis has partnered with leading researchers Jean-Laurent Casanova, M.D., Ph.D., Licia Selleri, M.D., Ph.D. and Maurizio Risolino, Ph.D. Our fundraising efforts will be directed to advance research and awareness, promote creation of a screening or test, and develop a treatment plan that includes education and management of the disease. Per Dr. Casanova, T.E.A.M. 4 Travis is currently the only nonprofit foundation in the world dedicated to ICA awareness and research. Dr. Casanova states the impact of this disease is global, for unlike some other genetic diseases, ICA knows no ethnic boundaries. Please visit our website, www.team4travis.org to learn more.
