Tamarind Tree is an initiative that believes in the power of open knowledge & technology to build equity. It runs a radically different space in a sleepy little tribal village, Sogve, in Maharashtra, India where a group of students and adults experiment with news ways of learning and teaching digitally. Tamarind Tree is a part of the global OPEN EDUCATION movement that aims to put high quality digital resources into the public domain for their use by everyone, irrespective of their age, background or anything else. The learners at Tamarind Tree have access to their course content on an open source Learning Management System (moodle) with content that has been thoughtfully and contextually made by an in house team of teachers. Students can also read e-books on an elibrary server hosted on the campus anywhere on a digital device. All the hardware as well as software is open and non proprietary. At our school, a learner is a producer and not merely a consumer. Students learn to code and create their own games and animations on Scratch and other tools.
