Deriving their name from the northern Tanzanian Pare tribe's word for the "the spark that ignites a fire," Mbesese is a collaborative 501(c)3 that designs and implements creative, sustainable solutions out of poverty.About The Mbesese Initiative for Sustainable Development:The Mbesese Initiative for Sustainable Development is a 501(c)3 non-profit in both the U.S and Same, Tanzania. The organization aims to help establish routes out of poverty by taking an integrated approach that includes increasing human capital (knowledge, education, experience), encouraging economic growth (more job opportunities, increased labor productivity, positive labor/employer relations), improving living conditions (increased construction jobs, improved living standards, improved health condition), and fostering environmental stewardship (protecting entire eco-systems which affect us all, land and resource management.) Mbesese maintains strategic partnerships with socially conscious organizations such as ARUP and the College of Architectural and Environmental Design at CalPoly, San Luis Obispo. These partners are integral team members for implementing our integrated methods and achieving our environmental design goals; all while helping students in the U.S. get involved and have a hands on learning experience about rural development.About The Same, Polytechnic College:The Same Polytechnic College is the main current project for Mbesese. The college will be a new vocational training center in the northern highlands of Tanzania. Offering both degree and continuing education programs to 1,200 students; the college will emphasize on addressing East Africa's need for effective farming techniques, proper building standards, education & teaching, mechanics and entrepreneurship through a student centered, learn-by-doing approach. Students will build knowledge and skills through practical hands-on learning experiences both in the classroom and on projects that benefit the local community.
