TOMA is a non-profit medical humanitarian 501 (c) (3) organization providing healthcare support to tribal communities in Latin America. Our mission is to improve the quality of healthcare among tribal communities in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in northeast Colombia. After eight years in Venezuela supporting healthcare programs with the Yanomami tribe, TOMA refocused its medical and dental humanitarian efforts and resources toward the tribes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Northern Colombia. In 2008 President Alvaro Uribe promised to improve healthcare and education among the 80,000 indigenous people of the Arhuaco, Wiwa, and Kogi tribes inhabiting the remote mountain range near the Venezuelan border. In 2012 TOMA accepted a unique request from the tribal health department of the Sierra Nevada involving the installation of solar energy systems for remote medical clinics and tribal schools. Electricity would be used to power vaccine refrigerators, medical and dental equipment, and deliver much-needed light to their facilities. We plan to continue assisting at least two remote villages per year with both medical and solar support and to empower the tribes of the Sierra Nevada to continue their work.
