In March 2011, Samantha Stein received funding from 100 Projects for Peace to build a human rights cultural center in Casablanca, Morocco. Samantha is a graduate of Lewis & Clark College ('11) and will be joined by eleven undergraduate volunteers during Summer 2011. Together, these volunteers will renovate the human rights cultural center, tutor Moroccan students and facilitate human rights workshops with local youth and educators.Samantha based Tools for Tolerance, Morocco in the Hay Mohammadi district of Casablanca because of the ongoing economic and educational disparities existent in one of Casablanca's most impoverished areas:In Casablanca, Morocco's largest city, over 500,000 residents live in haphazardly built homes, which are concentrated in the Hay Mohammadi district. Failure to socially and economically integrate the urban poor has led to their stigmatization by other classes, causing a vicious cycle of poverty and further discrimination. Tools for Tolerance, Morocco aims to break this cycle by generating local leadership through access to human rights education. While many Moroccan NGOs have worked to strengthen civil society through human rights initiatives, there is a lacuna of localized development initiatives focused on empowering youth as both local and global citizens through human rights education.
