alleviating poverty | promoting human rights | removing barriers for persons with disabilities in AfricaAccording to the World Health Organization approximately 65 million people worldwide require the use of a wheelchair due to a disability. As many as 80% of those who need wheelchairs live in low income and developing regions, such as Southern Africa. They contend with poor living conditions, nutrition, and hygiene, and lack of access to basic health services. Uhambo removes barriers of access for persons with disabilities in remote and rural areas of Africa by delivering community programs, providing opportunities, advocating for policy change for persons with disabilities and developing global partnerships. Uhambo with both U.S. and South African locations has been a leader in addressing the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in less-resourced settings by offering solutions such as:• Design and distribution of appropriate chairs and services to those most in need. All products are manufactured locally in South Africa by Uhambo's partner, Shonaquip.• Training of wheelchair technicians and rehabilitation workers in communities• Training of wheelchair users and caregivers in wheelchair maintenance, posture and product use• Community awareness and education programs• Advocacy by contributing to policy change• Conducting research in Africa to evaluate quality of life and to measure the health economicsFollow us on twitter: https://twitter.com/UhamboOrg
